Peter Lilley, MP for Hitchin & Harpenden, will join members of the Campaign Against Runway Expansion for a walk from Breachwood Green to Luton Airport to protest against the proposed expansion of the runway at the airport. The walk will start in the Village Hall car park Chapel Road, Breachwood Green at 11.00am on Sunday, 23rd May, but there are several ?pick-up points? en route for those who can?t either walk the entire route or wish to join after Church services.
Peter Lilley said: “I am delighted to join members of CARE on this walk to highlight our opposition to government plans to expand Luton Airport to the size of Gatwick.
“These proposals would result in a jumbo jet a minute landing at Luton. In addition to the resulting increase in noise levels, they would disgorge an extra 25 million passengers a year on local roads but the government propose no additional capacity to plans already announced for the M1 and M25. Likewise the government study endorsed the Strategic Rail Authority?s view that the planned enhancement of Thameslink would be insufficient to support the traffic generated by this massive expansion of Luton. This is grotesquely complacent. Commuters will rapidly fill up the proposed longer trains on Thameslink and in practice the bulk of the more than 25 million extra passengers expected at Luton will have to come by road. Hertfordshire?s roads simply cannot cope.?
