Peter Lilley, MP for Hitchin and Harpenden, called on Hertfordshire County Council to “think again about changing the sibling rule for allocating school places. At the very least the rule should be phased in to honour the legitimate expectations of families with children already at a school that their brothers and sisters could go to the same school.
“But I remain to be convinced that the change is desirable even in the longer term. Where brothers and sisters go to the same schools it reduces travel and congestion, avoids children waiting about, and encourages parental involvement in the school.
“The problems caused by this new rule could be particularly severe in areas like Harpenden and Hitchin with several primary schools fairly close together.
“Following meetings with local parents, I have asked the County Council to review this decision as speedily as possible.?
