Commenting on the publication yesterday of independent research by the Audit Commission on the performance of local authorities, Peter Lilley, MP for Hitchin and Harpenden, remarked:
“Labour and LibDem councils tax you more and deliver less. We already know that local residents in Labour councils pay, on average, ?124 more in Band D council tax every year than in Conservative councils and in LibDem controlled councils it is ?79 higher.
“Now, independent research shows that Labour and LibDem councils have dirtier streets, poorer street lighting, do not pay their bills on time, collect less of their rent and council tax and create more congestion from council roadworks.
“It?s official ? Labour and LibDem councils are a national disgrace. The results are particularly embarrassing for John Prescott. His own council has one of the highest rates of empty council houses, almost one in ten of its housing stock. People are staying homeless because of the incompetence of his colleagues. This illustrates that John Prescott should sort out his own backyard before attempting to concrete over the countryside with new developments.?
