Peter Lilley, MP for Hitchin and Harpenden, joined other Hertfordshire MPs today in calling for the establishment of a county-wide task forced to co-ordinate measures to prevent foot and mouth infection or to tackle vigorously any outbreak that might hit the county.
The MPs said: “It is clear that foot and mouth has taken root in other counties partly because of the slow or inadequate response. We should learn from that and draw together all relevant agencies ? county and district councils, police, MAFF, vets, territorial army, etc. ? to co-ordinate their plans to save Hertfordshire from the disaster that has hit Cumbria, Devon, Dumfries and Galloway and elsewhere. The government should be encouraging precautionary planning across the country but it has been downplaying this issue for political reasons. So we call on the County Council to take the lead in setting up this task force.?
Councillor Robert Ellis, Leader of Hertfordshire County Council, said: “Hertfordshire County Council is prepared to join in any group that will help protect us from this threat
