Rt Hon Lord Lilley

Peter Lilley, MP for Hitchin and Harpenden, said: “Following the representations I made on behalf of North Hertfordshire?s council taxpayers, I am pleased that the government now accepts that the cost of tackling Kimpton?s floods should be met largely from central government funds.

“Originally it was feared that only those areas flooded last November would be covered by government funds, whereas the rain which fell in November did not break out in floods in Kimpton until earlier this year. But, together with District Councilllor David Horrell, I have argued that the Kimpton floods were similar in scale and cause and the cost of tackling them exceeded what local council taxpayers could reasonably be expected to meet.

“The total costs involved approach ?400,000 under the arrangements now agreed by the government only about ?24,000 of this will fall on local council taxpayers.

“This is very good news indeed.?
