Peter Lilley, MP for Hitchin and Harpenden, attended the ?Soiree Nuitonne? at St. Johns Community Centre, Hitchin on Saturday evening to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Hitchin?s twinning with Nuits Saint Georges in France.
Mr. Lilley was unexpectedly asked to speak in French and explained his own connection with Nuits Saint George.
Peter Lilley said:
“I explained that when my constituency was cut in two by the Boundary Commission, the reason I chose to stand for the northern half was not just because it included the village of Lilley from where my ancestors come. It was also because I knew that Hitchin is twinned with Nuits Saint Georges: and nearly every year my wife and I visit that village to buy a case of our favourite local wine.?
The evening was organised by Hitchin Link ? the Town Twinning Association. Over forty visitors from Nuits Saint George including two local Conseille-Generaux and the Mayor of Bingen from Germany attended the event. Many local people from Hitchin and the surrounding area also shared in a highly enjoyable occasion.
On Friday, Mr. Lilley arranged a tour of the House of Commons for the visiting party from Nuits Saint Georges.
