Rt Hon Lord Lilley

Peter Lilley, MP for Hitchin and Harpenden, is to give evidence on Thursday, the 10th January, to the Hunt Review of plans to close the children?s and women?s services at Hemel Hospital and transfer them to Watford.

He will call for “the review to publish a clear programme of measures necessary to restore safe, high quality maternity and children?s services at Hemel or St Albans?.

Peter Lilley said: “I accept that safety is paramount. That may regrettably mean temporary changes. But if so any move must genuinely be temporary. People locally will not be satisfied unless the review sets a clear date for restoring services and a timetable for implementing the steps needed to make sure mothers and their children can have safe and accessible care.

“I shall also emphasise that care which is too inaccessible and distant can itself pose safety hazards. Watford is a wholly unsuitable location to serve Harpenden, Redbourn, St Albans, Sandridge and Wheathampstead.

“If the long-term solution to providing high quality hospital care is a single acute hospital serving all of West Herts that would need to be built on a new site accessible to Harpenden, Hemel, St Albans and Watford. The Review could re-open that question.?
