Peter Lilley, MP for Hitchin and Harpenden, has written to the Health Secretary demanding to see all the reports into the closure of the Special Baby Care Unit at Hemel Hempstead. This follows news that the newly created Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Strategic Health Authority has commissioned yet another report into the matter.
Peter Lilley said:
“I have written to the Health Secretary, Alan Milburn, asking him to provide me with copies of all the reports looking into the future of women?s and children?s services at Hemel Hempstead.
“This follows months of serial reporting and confusion. Reports are commissioned, then buried, then a new report is called for as a substitute for action and resources. First, the local NHS Trust decided to close the SCBU at Hemel; then Lord Hunt agreed to an inquiry ?whose findings have still not been published; and then he sent in the Modernisation Agency allegedly to help but, as it turned out, they too merely produced a report (also unpublished) that it should close.
“I now learn that the newly created Beds and Herts Strategic Health Authority Chairman, Ian White, says that he ?has asked for [yet another] report to be prepared? on Hemel?s maternity services.
“The Government and local health authorities are guilty of serial reporting over the future of maternity services at Hemel. What we need now is decisive action.?
