A Leaflet circulated by Liberal Democrats makes the wholly unfounded
assertion that Peter Lilley “cut the income of local Post Offices”.
This is the opposite of the truth.
The enclosed letter from the General Secretary of the Federation of
SubPostmasters to Peter Lilley says: “We were and remain extremely
grateful to you for listening to us and acting in a way which gave hope and
promise to the nation‘s Subpostmasters.
“As you know we are non-party political and only wish to set the record
straight. We believe you went the extra mile for Subpostmasters,
regrettably with the change in administration, the threat of Automatic
Credit Transfer returned with a vengeance.”
On 18th April Peter Lilley asked Mr Edelston, the Liberal Democrat candidate
concerned, to withdraw his false accusation. He has decided to leave the
lie uncorrected until after the election.
Peter Lilley said: “In the past I have found local politicians to be honest
and willing to admit mistakes. This is the first time I have met such
shameless dishonesty. It may reflect the advice given to Liberal
candidates by their central party machine to “be wicked, act shamelessly…”
which was exposed by the Daily Mirror last week.
“I am sure electors will treat a party which has contempt for the truth with
the contempt which it deserves.”
