Rt Hon Lord Lilley

Peter Lilley, MP for Hitchin and Harpenden, today pointed to new statistics
published by the Government showing the percentage of council tax collected
by each council in England. North Hertfordshire District Council gathered
97.6 per cent of the estimated total it should be collecting over the last
year, compared to an average of 95 per cent in Labour councils across

    Peter Lilley said:

“I welcome these new Government figures which show that the council is being
well managed. Whereas in Labour-run councils, only 95 per cent of council
tax is collected, across North Hertfordshire, the council has managed 97.6
per cent. This is one of the reasons why Conservative councils charge lower
council taxes and can afford to deliver better public services. This better
than average performance is worth ?18 per council tax payer in North Herts.”

Cllr. F. J. Smith, Leader of North Hertfordshire District Council, added:

“We aim to give value for money. Local people appreciate that. Our staff
are to be congratulated on their efficiency, and sympathetic attitude when
    residents need help.”
