Rt Hon Lord Lilley

Peter Lilley, MP for Hitchin and Harpenden, will attend the Key Worker
Housing Summit organised by Hertfordshire County Council on Thursday. It
will be held at Offley Place, Great Offley between 12.30 and 5pm on Thursday
    11th July 2002.

    Peter Lilley said:

“Many of the problems we face in education, healthcare and policing are made
worse by the difficulty in recruiting essential staff because of
    Hertfordshire‘s rising housing costs.

“I doubt very much whether the answer lies in the Council buying up property
to house key workers as some have suggested. People want to get onto the
housing ladder themselves and not become tied tenants. I hope the summit
will investigate the provision of housing allowances and ensure that we can
recruit people to provide key public services. I look forward to hearing
creative ideas emerging from this brainstorming session on how to tackle
    these problems”
