Rt Hon Lord Lilley

Peter Lilley, MP for Hitchin and Harpenden, expressed support today for the recent lobby of Parliament by the National Village Halls Forum. Village hall groups are concerned that the National Lottery?s Community Fund has slashed funding to village halls from ?32 million a year to ?17 million.

    Peter Lilley said:

“With the accelerating demise of Post Offices under the present Government, our village halls are becoming an increasingly vital resource for Hertfordshire?s community life. Yet they are facing a series of new burdens, such as from fire, access and health & safety regulations. Many, built in the 1930s onwards, are also in need of extensive renovation.

“However, the National Lottery?s Community Fund has slashed funding for village halls, and instead diverted resources to highly controversial political causes. Such political donations are damaging the reputation of the Lottery and harming all charities.

“Conservatives are calling for new guidelines for the Community Fund. We want more funding to support the creation and renovation of village halls ? not least across Hertfordshire – rather than see money wasted on controversial political campaigning.?
