Peter Lilley, MP for Hitchin and Harpenden, met Hertfordshire firefighters at the Hitchin Fire Station last Friday (29th November). Mr. Lilley was given a presentation on the various aspects of their work, including training, equipment and their role in the community.
Peter Lilley said after the visit:
“I was impressed by the firefighters? presentation on the training they undertake, the skills they possess and their vital community work installing safety equipment and educating the public to take precautions against fire hazards in their homes and businesses. Hertfordshire firefighters seem to be well ahead of the rest of the country in terms of ?modernisation?.
“I made clear to firefighters that as a former Treasury Minister I could not support the strike and believed that any exceptional pay increases must be paid for by increases in efficiency. However, I understand firefighters? resentment at the way they have been treated by this Government. First Blair promises to stand back and let the employers negotiate. Then he repudiates their agreement. For as long as Labour Ministers continue to take a different line each day and John Prescott continues to blunder his way through this dispute, the chances of reaching an agreement through constructive negotiation become ever more remote.?
