Peter Lilley, MP for Hitchin and Harpenden, last week sponsored a backbench Bill to restore police powers to remove alcohol from young people in public places. Mr. Lilley supported Bob Spink, Conservative MP for Castle Point, in his presentation of the Private Member?s Bill on Wednesday 15th January.
Peter Lilley said:
“The Government?s Criminal Justice and Police Act 2001 removed police powers to confiscate unopened cans and bottles of alcohol from young people under the age of 18 in public places. Bob Spink?s Bill would close this loophole.
“Under-age drinking is a menace to local communities and quite often leads young people into a culture of antisocial behaviour, street crime and drugs. It is absurd that the Government actually removed these powers in the first place. I very much hope that this Bill becomes law or at least that the Government amends its own legislation to remove such a ridiculous loophole.?
