Peter Lilley, MP for Hitchin and Harpenden, last Friday received a petition from customers of the Manor Pharmacy in Wheathampstead. Mr. Lilley heard concerns from Community Pharmacist, Graham Phillips that local pharmacies may suffer if supermarkets are to be allowed to prescribe medicines. This follows a report from the Office of Fair Trading recommending such a move.
“Village pharmacists and their customers are concerned that the Office of Fair Trading recommendation that supermarkets be free to prescribe medicine could mean the end of smaller pharmacies so that members of the local community who cannot travel to supermarkets will be at a disadvantage.
“Local pharmacies, such as those in Wheathampstead and Redbourn, provide a valuable service and I do not want to see their independence unnecessarily undermined. So I have written to Patricia Hewitt, the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry, urging her to take account of these concerns and I look forward to receiving her reply.?
