Peter Lilley, MP for Hitchin and Harpenden, is to visit Hitchin Police Station to discuss local policing issues with ward constables including policy towards people who defend their own property.
Peter Lilley said: “I know from correspondence I have received that there is great concern locally about the lack of police officers on the beat – not least in some of the villages around Hitchin. A recent survey in Kimpton found that 55 people out of the 125 who replied said that they had experience crime in the past 5 years with overwhelming support for more visible policing by officers who know the community. The Parish Council has reported that in the past three months there been a large increase in criminal activity and anti-social behaviour. I shall be stressing the need for more obvious policing to reassure people who, rightly, feel threatened by these levels of crime, vandalism and anti-social behaviour.
“In the light of intense public concern about prosecutions of householders elsewhere in the country I shall also be also be discussing the policy of local police in the event of householders defending their property against burglars.”
