Rt Hon Lord Lilley

Peter Lilley, MP for Hitchin and Harpenden, has backed an Early Day Motion supporting the Royal Anglian Regiment which incorporates former historic county regiments, including the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Regiment (16th/44th Foot) formed in 1919.

Peter Lilley said: “It is extraordinary that the government should be planning to cut 4 battalions of infantry, including a possible cut in the Royal Anglian Regiment from two to only one battalion, at a time when the army is over-stretched, undermanned and unable safely to meet all its operational challenges.

“The regiment already forms an integral part of the army?s proposals to establish regional regiments of three battalions elsewhere in the UK. Rather than cutting Royal Anglian Regiment down the government should reinstate its 3rd Battalion which would be fully in accord with the proposed new structure.?
