Peter Lilley, MP for Hitchin and Harpenden, has put the government on the back foot by producing new evidence for the Hutton Inquiry. He wrote to Lord Hutton sending him a copy of the transcript of the discussion in which Tony Blair thrice denied authorising the release of Dr Kelly‘s name. Lord Hutton admitted that he had not been sent this by the government.
Peter Lilley also discovered through Parliamentary Questions that the Ministry of Defence had not, as Geoff Hoon and Tony Blair claimed, “carefully followed established procedures” in dealing with Dr Kelly.
The Ministry of Defence has carried out no fewer than 47 leak inquiries since Labour was elected in 1997 and they have always previously refused to divulge the name of the suspect or any details of the inquiry.
