Rt Hon Lord Lilley

Peter Lilley, MP for Hitchin and Harpenden, was invited by the Sikh community to participate in the Vaisakhi celebrations this weekend when Sikhs mark the foundation of their faith. He joined in the parade through Hitchin on Saturday and on Sunday addressed the three Gudwaras in Radcliffe Road, Bearton Avenue and Wilbury Way.

Peter Lilley said: “I emphasised the contribution the Sikh community makes to this country in industry, commerce and education; the debt we owe to the many Sikhs who fought for this country‘s freedom in two World Wars; and the peaceful and law-abiding nature of the Sikh community.

“I also look forward to the rising generation of Sikhs playing an even more prominent role in future as local councillors, magistrates and school governors – and, indeed, MPs demonstrating that Sikhs can be both 100% British and true to their Sikh heritage.”
