Peter Lilley, MP for Hitchin and Harpenden, is to sponsor a Bill in Parliament calling for St George?s Day to be made a public holiday.
Peter Lilley said: “I am delighted to sponsor a Bill calling for St George?s Day to be made a public holiday which will be introduced by my colleague, Andrew Rosindell, in Parliament tomorrow (Wednesday).
“We have fewer public holidays in this country than in many other countries. Unlike our Scottish, Welsh and Irish brethren we English have rather neglected our patron Saint even though he is recognised world wide as a symbol of chivalry and courage. What better way to make good that deficiency than to celebrate as a public holiday St George?s Day ? the 23rd April – which is also the birthday of Shakespeare, the greatest master of the English language.?
