Peter Lilley, MP for Hitchin and Harpenden, has welcomed the government?s decision to postpone the revaluation of Council Tax, but urged the government to cancel it entirely rather than just putting it off to a later year. He said that Hitchin and Harpenden would probably be one of the biggest losers in the revaluation because of the rise in property values in this area in recent years.
Peter Lilley said: “I know how worried many of my constituents have been at the threat of moving to a higher council tax band, particularly elderly people on fixed incomes and young families struggling to pay off a mortgage while raising their children. The decision to postpone the revaluation will be a welcome relief for them. But no-one will feel really secure until the idea is abandoned entirely.?
