Rt Hon Lord Lilley

A record number of over 80 young voters braved the heat wave to visit their MP, Peter Lilley, in Parliament on Monday evening. The high number of visitors from Hitchin and Harpenden shattered even more emphatically than in previous years the myth that young people are apathetic about parliamentary democracy.

Peter said, “I was delighted so many young people to Parliament for my annual meeting for young voters. They came in unprecedented numbers and packed in a committee room for a lively discussion. They bombarded me with questions about student loans, my views on liberalising the cannabis laws, my stance on Iraq and global poverty.

“Afterwards they visited the gallery to see a debate in the Commons about the work of the Electoral Commission. As always I found the meeting invaluable and enjoyable. MPs need to keep in touch with the views of young people and this annual meeting helps me to do so.?
