Peter Lilley, MP for Hitchin and Harpenden, has written to David Blunkett calling on him not to disregard the higher costs associated with education in the South East.
Peter Lilley said: “In Hertfordshire, the removal of the Area Cost Adjustment from the post-16 element of Hertfordshire County Council?s Standard Spending Assessment (SSA) would result in a loss of ?4 million, nearly 10 per cent. In addition, Hertfordshire TEC has calculated that colleges and work-based training providers would lose ?3 million per year.
“Such a significant funding reduction would clearly have a very negative impact on education and training opportunities for young people in Hitchin and Harpenden, and in Hertfordshire as a whole.
“Moreover, if this precedent were established the similar Area Cost Adjustment for all other services would be threatened. That could cost Hertfordshire County Council, District Councils and the Police Authority ?92 million per annum.
“I have therefore strongly urged that the Area Cost Adjustment should be retained.”
