LILLEY WELCOMES DECISION TO RE-OPEN SOUTHDOWN POST OFFICE
Harpenden MP Peter Lilley has described the decision by the Post Office to restore a counter service in Southdown as “a victory for public opinion.”
He said: “It was a terrible blow to the local community when the sub post office in Balfour News was closed at very short notice in November 2008.
“I campaigned against the closure, as did many other people. What made matters worse was that it was the second Harpenden post office to close in a couple of months. The first was at Station Road North.
“Now, the Post Office has accepted the arguments for a new facility. It says it received a large number of comments from members of the public about the Southdown closure, and all of them were in favour of the service being restored.
“It is really great news that a sub post office will be opened in the Co-Op store at 130 Southdown Road, just 50 yards from the old Balfour News site.
“The new branch will have level entry for wheelchair users, a counter with low level facilities and a hearing loop. It will offer a wide range of services which the people of Southdown have had to do without for far too long. All we need now is a firm date for the opening.
“In addition, the public toilets attached to the Co-Op (the old Somerfield store) are being retained, so all in all it’s a really good result for the people of the district.”
