LILLEY SEES OFF RECORD NUMBER OF CHARITY WALKERS

Peter Lilley, MP for Hitchin and Harpenden, opened the 31st National Samaritans Walk through the Chilterns on Saturday (June 12).

A record number of 120 walkers from branches of the Samaritans throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland set off from Lilley village hall on a fundraising event organised by the Luton, South Bedfordshire and Harpenden branch of the charity.

Peter Lilley said: “It was a pleasure to set the walkers off. They had in front of them a walk through some of the most beautiful parts of my constituency, using the John Bunyan trail and the Icknield way.

“It is heartening to know that so many people are inspired by the work of the Samaritans that they are prepared to take part in an event like this. It’s a great way to raise awareness of the charity, which offers a 24 hour confidential hotline for people suffering emotional stress or contemplating suicide.

“The organisers tell me they are expecting to raise more than £13,000 from the sponsored walk, which is a terrific result. I congratulate the local branch on organising such a successful event.”
