Peter Lilley, MP for Hitichin and Harpenden, has asked the Secretary State for Transport, Stephen Byers, whether re-nationalisation of Railtrack will delay the timetable for the Thameslink investment programme.
He has tabled a written Parliamentary Question on the matter and is awaiting an answer from the Department for Transport, Local Government and the Regions.
Peter Lilley said:
“Last July I was assured by senior managers from Railtrack and train operating companies that the investment programme for Thameslink will bring major improvements in services. I was promised that services on both the Hitchin and Harpenden lines into London would increase to12 trains per hour at peak times, with longer trains and better connections south of Kings Cross.
“I fear that the effective re-nationalisation of Railtrack may put the long awaited improvements to Thameslink services in jeopardy. The Government may well have shot itself in the foot by sending the company into administration without any compensation which risks frightening off the private investment that we need ? including for the vitally important Thameslink route.
