LILLEY WELCOMES BUNCEFIELD PROSECUTIONS
Peter Lilley, MP for Hitchin and Harpenden, has welcomed the decision to bring prosecutions following the Buncefield oil depot fire.
He said: “While not in any way prejudging the outcome of the proceedings, I am glad that the authorities have not shrunk from bringing prosecutions if they feel in the light of the evidence there are charges to answer.
“For the future, the key issue is whether the site should be rebuilt. Since the depot was established, there has been considerable housing development nearby.
“There should be no question of automatically rebuilding the terminal, especially if major new house building is planned for the area. The safety of everyone living near the site should be the priority.”
The huge explosion and fire at Buncefield in December 2005 caused widespread damage and more than forty people were injured. Homeowners and businesses affected by the blast are currently taking legal action to claim compensation.
