Rt Hon Lord Lilley

Peter Lilley, MP for Hitchin and Harpenden, has welcomed a decision that should lead to the development of new sheltered housing for the elderly in Kimpton, to replace the facilities at Probyn House.

North Herts District Council has agreed in principle to sell land for residential development in Lloyd Way, Kimpton, to North Hertfordshire Homes Ltd, a housing association which manages a number of sheltered housing schemes. It is a condition of the sale that Probyn House is replaced by alternative sheltered accommodation.

Peter Lilley said: “Given the concerns about the process of closing Probyn House – particularly the assessment of future demand – I welcome the Council’s decision to make the sale of this land conditional on providing new residential accommodation for elderly people in Kimpton and their relatives.

“Whatever happens, we must ensure that if this sale goes through it involves provision of adequate sheltered accommodation for the elderly as well as good quality affordable housing for local people.

Councillor John Bishop, who represents Kimpton on North Herts District Council, said: “This is not a done deal, but I would be delighted if the Council and the housing association can successfully complete negotiations which guarantee that Probyn House will be replaced. It would be great news for the village and for people needing sheltered housing accommodation.”
