Rt Hon Lord Lilley

Peter Lilley, MP for Hitchin and Harpenden, will continue to step up the pressure on the Government to change proposals to expand Luton Airport before the revised consultation document is published. Mr. Lilley recently received a reply from John Spellar, the Transport Minister, claiming that the Government ?has not made any decisions about expansion of the airport?.

    Peter Lilley said:

“I wrote to John Spellar last November, following his evasive answer to my question in Parliament about the widespread opposition to existing plans to expand Luton. I demanded a written assurance that the idea of a new long runway at Luton be downgraded from an assumption to an option like the proposals affecting all other airports.

“Despite denying that the Government has made up its mind, Mr. Spellar failed to answer my central question about the status of the proposals. On the other hand, the minister has asked his officials to consider the points that I made alongside any other representations from members of the public and interested parties before the new consultation is published.

“I believe that there is still all to play for. I very much hope that people will continue to write to the Transport Secretary, Alistair Darling, to express their opposition to the expansion plans. In the meantime, I shall continue to put maximum pressure on Ministers to change the status of the expansion proposals before the new consultation document is published.?
