Pensioners in Hitchin and Harpenden hit by new way of paying pensions

- Tuesday, 10th February 2004

Peter Lilley, MP for Hitchin and Harpenden, has urged pensioners and others to let him know if they have any problems arranging to receive their pension and other benefit payments via the Post Office. The new scheme is currently being rolled out in this area.

Peter Lilley said: "The Department for Work and Pensions has begun writing to pensioners and others in this constituency telling them they will in future have to have their pension and other benefits paid into a bank account. They do have the right to continue to draw money from the post office by setting up a new Post Office card account.

A number of people have contacted me to say they are finding the process unnecessarily complicated. This is regrettable since Post Offices, who provide an invaluable focus to local communities need to retain their customers to keep in business.
