Peter Lilley meets with campaigners fighting to save Calicott Centre

- Monday, 13th November 2000

Last Friday Peter Lilley, MP for Hitchin and Harpenden, met campaigners who are fighting to save the Caldicott Youth Centre site in Hitchin from redevelopment.

Following the meeting, Peter Lilley said: "Having discussed concerns raised by campaigners about the loss of youth facilities housed in these historic buildings, I will be visiting the Caldicott Centre to meet young people who use the centre and to see it in action. I believe the Trustees of Hitchin Youth Trust are mistaken not to have discussed the issues more widely and I have written to them requesting an urgent meeting.

I hope they will be willing to meet me, failing which I would pursue this matter with the Charity Commission.?

A spokesman for Hitchin Forum who asked for the meeting with the MP said: "We are tremendously encouraged by Peter Lilley?s concern in this matter. We have had nothing but support to date for our campaign to save these fantastic facilities for children in Hitchin. Parents, young people and youth workers alike will be greatly heartened by the involvement of our Member of Parliament?.
