Lilley attacks Government plan to grab 7million from schools and services in Herts

- Thursday, 23rd November 2000

Peter Lilley, MP for Hitchin and Harpenden, today supported Hertfordshire County Council?s campaign to keep the ?7million which the government plans to remove by ?fiddling the grant formula?.

"The government?s motives are clear?, he said. "They want to shift resources to traditional Labour voting areas in an election year. But the impact on schools and services in Hertfordshire would be severe. Moreover, this change is a breach of the government?s promise to leave the funding method unchanged until the review of local government finance is complete.

"Tony Blair admitted yesterday that the staffing ratio in secondary schools is worse now than under the Conservatives. So much for his promise to make education a priority.

"This government gives with one hand and takes away with the other.?
