Lilley urges Minister to reject representations by Council about loss of 3million to sixth forms

- Friday, 27th July 2001

Peter Lilley, MP for Hitchin and Harpenden, has today written to the
Secretary of State for Education reinforcing the representations made by the
County Council about the threatened loss of ?3 million to Hertfordshire?s
Sixth Forms.

Peter Lilley said: "This would be immensely damaging to schools in my
constituency and I urge the government to re-consider this very harmful
decision. I am also concerned that this change could be used as a
precedent to undermine the Area Cost Adjustment which helps reflect the
higher costs which the County Council has to incur to provide education and
other services."

Peter Lilley added: "Having fought the general election on promises of
increased resources for education, it is the height of cynicism for the
government to reveal this damaging cut only weeks afterwards."
