MP speaks out against Sinn Fein/IRA MPs

- Friday, 14th December 2001

Peter Lilley, MP for Hitchin and Harpenden, spoke out yesterday against the
Government?s decision to give Sinn Fein/IRA MPs special privileges in
Parliament. In an exchange with the Leader of the House of Commons,
Robin Cook, Peter Lilley protested at the decision to give Sinn Fein/IRA
MPs, who have refused to take the Oath and thus their seats, access to
Parliamentary offices, funds and staff.

Peter Lilley said after the exchange in the House of Commons:

"I object to the fact that four Sinn Fein/IRA MPs - one of whom is a former
commandant of the IRA - should receive these privileges when they refuse to
take the Oath of Allegiance to the Constitution.

"It was an extraordinary measure for the government to bring forward on the
same the day that Parliament passed a raft of measures to tackle terrorism
on a wide scale, and also when the Indian Parliament was attacked by
terrorists."
