MP condemns speculative development of greenbelt land

- Tuesday, 7th May 2002

Peter Lilley, MP for Hitchin and Harpenden, has tabled an Early Day Motion condemning speculative development of greenbelt land in Hertfordshire. A St Albans based company has acquired prime greenbelt land at Kimpton, near Harpenden. Other MPs whose constituencies are similarly affected have also signed the EDM.

"It is vital that we protect precious greenbelt land from this kind of development. This particular company, Property Spy Limited, acquires large sites, divides them into smaller plots and markets them for speculative sale on the hope of future residential development.

"I fear that these plots, such as the one at Kimpton, would be left to degrade and would become an unsightly feature on the landscape. So I am encouraging local authorities to explore ways of preventing prime greenbelt land from being exploited in this way. One option available to local councils is compulsory purchase since potential buyers would be deterred if they knew it was even being considered.?
