Lilley: Byers should stand down

- Friday, 10th May 2002

Peter Lilley, MP for Hitchin and Harpenden, yesterday attacked Stephen Byers
in the House of Commons for his costly mishandling of the Martin Sixsmith
affair. It was announced this week that taxpayers? money will be used to
pay off the Transport Secretary?s former media chief.

Peter Lilley said:

"Stephen Byers adds insult to injury. He refuses to say why he is using
?200,000 of taxpayers? money to pay off Martin Sixsmith. That money should
have come from the Labour party. Taxpayers? money would be better spent on
improving stations in Hitchin and Harpenden.

"My constituents are concerned that rail services have got worse under
Stephen Byers. He has lost the trust of those in the rail industry whom he
and his Government appointed. Worse still, his suggestion that my
constituents are not interested in integrity and honesty in politics is
deeply insulting. They know that without integrity and honesty democratic
government will not work. The Transport Secretary should resign."
