Lilley meets nursing home residents

- Tuesday, 8th October 2002

Following the news that Benslow Nursing Home in Hitchin is to close temporarily, Peter Lilley, MP for Hitchin and Harpenden, met staff and residents on Friday (4th October).

Peter Lilley said:

"The shock decision to close Benslow Nursing Home has left staff and residents in a very difficult position. Relatives of the 19 residents have been given 28 days to find alternative accommodation. The manager, Mr. McQuinn, also spoke to the meeting and said that he could not ensure the safety of residents and staff while planned refurbishment work takes place. He said that he had no alternative other than temporary closure.

"In further discussion, I tried to persuade Mr. McQuinn to reconsider his decision and discuss with builders, staff and relatives whether it would be possible to phase the building work so that residents would not be required to leave. Unfortunately I was unable to persuade him of this.

"I am therefore discussing the matter with Hertfordshire Social Services to ensure that maximum help will be given to residents to find new homes.?
