AIRPORT PROTEST MUST CONTINUE SAYS MP

- Tuesday, 31st January 2006

Peter Lilley MP, after presenting a petition to Parliament against Luton airport‘s expansion plans, urged constituents to continue their protests and ignore attempts by the airport operators to close down debate.

Presenting the petition in the House of Commons, Peter pointed out the scale of opposition; "The petition has been signed by 7,710 local residents. There have also been 1,770 text messages and more than 1,000 letters, 250 of which arrived in today?s post.?

The petition called on the House to urge the Government to ensure Luton remained a medium haul, medium size airport, and to refuse permission to allow it to expand to the size of Heathrow, as Luton Airport Management are campaigning for.

Peter commented today, "Letters and petition signatures are still pouring in. Although the airport authorities have declared that the consultation ended on the 27th of January, that is a date they arbitrarily set to try to bring protest to a close - because they fear protest. That is no reason why our protest should stop. I urge everyone who has not written already to Luton Airport Management to do so and copy it to me, which I will then send on to Alistair Darling, the Secretary Of State for Transport.?

"PETITION
Luton Airport
7.17 pm
Mr. Peter Lilley (Hitchin and Harpenden) (Con): I wish to present a petition opposing the massive expansion of Luton airport with two runways and two terminals, disgorging 30 million cars on to the roads of Hertfordshire. The petition has been signed by 7,710 local residents. There have also been 1,770 text messages and more than 1,000 letters, 250 of which arrived in today‘s post.
The Petitioners therefore request that the House of Commons urge the Government to ensure that Luton airport remains a medium haul, medium sized airport and to refuse permission for plans to make it second only in capacity to Heathrow.
And the Petitioners remain, etc.?
