Lilley welcomes extension to Airport Consultation and continues to press for changes to Luton propos

- Friday, 29th November 2002

Peter Lilley, MP for Hitchin and Harpenden, has welcomed the fact that the Government was forced to extend the Airports Consultation period, which was far too short. This follows a High Court ruling that the Government was wrong to exclude Gatwick from the Consultation.

Peter Lilley said after the announcement:

"The Consultation period was always far too short. I welcome the fact that it will be extended for a further four months. The Government was wrong in the first place to exclude Gatwick from such a major review of airport capacity in the South East. It is clear that the Government had not thought through all the alternatives properly ? including that for Luton ? before presenting them to the public.

"I shall use this opportunity to argue that the status of the proposal for a new, long runway at Luton should be changed to an option, rather than an assumption. I will also continue to mobilise massively growing support to stop over-expansion at Luton.?
