May puts boot into failing government

- Monday, 3rd March 2003

Peter Lilley, MP for Hitchin and Harpenden, last Friday welcomed Theresa May, Chairman of the Conservative Party, as guest speaker to the Hitchin and Harpenden Conservative Association Dinner.? Mrs. May made a powerful attack on the Government?s failing policies on crime, health and asylum.

Peter Lilley said after the dinner:

"We were delighted to welcome Theresa May to this year?s sell-out Conservative Association dinner.? She launched a stinging attack on the Government?s failure to tackle rising crime and its inability properly to reform the Health Service.? Her speech also came on the day that new figures showed asylum applications rising above 100,000 for the first time.

"She also highlighted the fact that Conservative controlled Hertfordshire County Council was recently rated one of the best local authorities in the country by the Government. Yet it is being forced to raise council tax by 18 per cent because the Government is diverting resources to Labour heartlands.?

"I look forward to seeing Theresa May continue to put the boot into the government?s record on public services ahead of this year?s local elections.?
