Lilley and WAMI to meet General Medical Council over disgraced consultant

- Thursday, 10th April 2003

Peter Lilley, MP for Hitchin and Harpenden, and Mrs. Insley, founder of WAMI (Women Against Medical Injustice), will meet Neil Marshall, Head of Screening at the General Medical Council, on Tuesday 15th April to discuss disciplinary procedures relating to Dr Kane?s conduct as a consultant gynaecologist and the fact that he will be allowed to take up a teaching post. Mr. Lilley has been pressing for a meeting so that WAMI may properly air its complaints with the General Medical Council.

Peter Lilley said:

"I am holding this meeting to ensure that Mrs. Insley?s complaints about Dr Kane?s conduct are not swept under the carpet. I shall discuss with Mr. Marshall WAMI?s concerns about how the GMC?s rules operate. They are particularly concerned that the rules permitted Mr. Kane to refuse to undertake an assessment, allowed him to remain registered and will permit him to take up a teaching post even though complaints against him have never fully been investigated.

"I hope this will be a constructive meeting which will assist WAMI to bring these issues to a resolution.?
