Peter Lilley secures Ministerial denial of plans for Outer Orbital Motorway

- Tuesday, 24th June 2003

Peter Lilley, MP for Hitchin and Harpenden, has secured from the Secretary of State for Transport, Alistair Darling, a denial that the government has plans for an outer orbital motorway beyond the M25 and the promise of a statement to Parliament within three weeks.

Peter Lilley said: "Following allegations by Transport 2000 that a scheme was emerging for an outer orbital motorway cutting through this constituency, I wrote to Alistair Darling. I asked him to clarify his plans and to set my constituents‘ minds at rest.

"I am pleased that he has said ‘there are no plans for an outer orbital motorway beyond the M25‘. But we will not be fully reassured until we know what other road plans the government has which may affect this area.

"I shall urge the Transport Secretary to make a full oral Statement in Parliament, rather than just issuing a written statement, so that I can question him about the details of his plans."
