Peter Lilley MP attends meeting of the Oakfield Estate Residents Action Group

- Tuesday, 14th October 2003

Peter Lilley, MP for Hitchin and Harpenden, and Highbury Councillor Lesley Greenwood attended a packed meeting of the Oakfield Estate Residents Action Group to hear local concern about plans to develop the Fountain Pub site on Ninesprings Way.

Summing up at the end of the meeting, Peter Lilley said: "The key issue is safety. There are legitimate concerns about the safety risks from the traffic which would be generated by a block of 12 flats, exiting direct on to Ninesprings Way opposite the junction with Oakfield Avenue, given the poor visibility which would be made worse by extra parking. The traffic is already dangerous since vehicles have twice demolished a garden wall opposite.

Councillor Greenwood, who originally raised the safety issue at the Council meeting and site visit, added: "I cannot believe that councillors will pass a proposal for development on this site unless and until the safety issue is satisfactorily resolved. I will continue to press hard on this safety issue."

Cllr Greenwood and Peter Lilley also promised to investigate the reported assertion made by a highways officer that had the proposal been for a single house he would have turned it down.

"Surely any objections to a single house must apply with even greater force to a block of flats," Peter Lilley commented, adding; "I accept that development on the site is probably inevitable because of the need for housing but I believe that it should be compatible with the character of the area.
