Lilley joins Hare Coursing Patrol

- Monday, 29th March 2004

Peter Lilley, MP for Hitchin and Harpenden, joined police officers on ‘hare coursing patrol‘ at the weekend. Police have recently introduced these patrols since North Hertfordshire is a favourite area for this illegal activity.

Peter Lilley said: "I am very glad to see that the police are taking this problem seriously. Illegal hare coursing can damage crops and game. More disturbingly, I have received reports that farmers and gamekeepers have faced threats and intimidation when they have tried to prevent illegal hare coursing on their land. I am glad to say that the hare coursing patrols - now equipped with 4 wheel drive vehicles enabling them to pursue hare coursers‘ across country - have recently been successful in deterring this activity. As a result we saw no hare coursing during the morning patrol. But we did see a number of hares who looked very relieved to see their protectors rather than men with lurcher dogs!

"It was both an encouraging and interesting morning‘s work"
