Local Business People Flock to Hear Ruth Lea

- Tuesday, 22nd March 2005

Over seventy business men and women crowded in to listen to Ruth Lea, the leading economic and business commentator who heads up the influential Think Tank, the Centre for Policy Studies. Peter Lilley, MP for Hitchin and Harpenden, invited her to speak to members of his Hitchin and Harpenden Business Club and their guests last Friday, 18th March.

Peter Lilley said: "Ruth Lea was Head of Policy at the Institute of Directors, but her brilliant critique of government policies stung the government into ousting her. She now runs the Centre for Policy Studies, the influential Think Tank. Last Friday she gave us an incisive analysis of Gordon Brown?s latest budget and an insight into the current strengths and weaknesses of the British economy.

"She told us that Labour would almost certainly have to raise taxes after the general election to fund the huge increase in public spending that the Chancellor has instigated. But the decline productivity in the public sector means there is considerable scope for improving efficiency and eliminating waste.?
