LILLEY CALLS ON HEALTH AUTHORITY TO BRING IN NEW TECHNOLOGY TO HELP CANCER DIAGNOSIS

- Monday, 25th July 2005

Peter Lilley, MP for Hitchin and Harpenden, has urged the local Strategic Health Authority and Primary Care Trusts to agree to the early introduction of liquid based cytology ? a new and much more accurate system of testing for cervical cancer.

Peter Lilley said: "It has come up in Parliament that liquid based cytology is being introduced at different rates across the country ? for example it is already in place in Scotland. I want to ensure that women living in my constituency get the best possible treatment - and this technology would give more accurate and effective advance warning of the risk of cervical cancer.

"I have taken the matter up with the Strategic Health Authority and it is anticipated that the technology will be introduced here in the Summer of 2006 subject to the agreement of the Primary Care Trusts.

"I am therefore writing to the Primary Care Trusts to ensure that they agree to that timetable.?
