LILLEY INSPECTS LOCAL MAN'S INVENTION

- Tuesday, 25th October 2005

Peter Lilley, MP for Hitchin and Harpenden, visited the British Invention Show at Alexandra Palace to see the Evacuation System ? designed to enable people to escape from burning buildings - invented by local Hitchin resident Stephen Jones.

Peter Lilley said: "Stephen Jones has invented this telescopic chute system to evacuate people from buildings in life threatening situations. Stephen?s experience in the aviation business gave him the idea and he has used his engineering skills to develop a highly practical system which has attracted a lot of interest.

"Since my time as Secretary of State for Trade and Industry I have been keen to promote innovation. So I have been delighted to help Stephen overcome some of the bureaucratic obstacles which lay in the way of getting the Kite mark such a system needs to be marketable.

Stephen Jones said: "I was delighted with the response that Peter Lilley has shown in helping me progress my invention which is designed to save lives. After carrying out research with the Home Office, I was alarmed to read that on average nine people die in house fires every week and an average of 18,000 people are injured during the evacuation from fires in the UK.?
