VICTORY OVER HERCEPTIN

- Monday, 21st November 2005

Peter Lilley, MP for Hitchin and Harpenden, is delighted to learn that the PCT has finally agreed - following a great deal of pressure from both Sarah Nayler-Reed and him - to fund her early treatment with Herceptin for breast cancer.

Peter Lilley said: "It is really good news that Sarah will now get early treatment with Herceptin.

"Herceptin can literally be a matter of life and death. If treated with Herceptin in the first year after they are diagnosed, it dramatically increases the likelihood that the disease will not return and that they can lead a full and normal life.
"Only twenty-three percent of women with breast cancer are HER2 positive and Herceptin can only help them. Whilst the drug has previously been available for late-stage breast cancer, it has only been only available in the early stages for those women who can afford to pay for it and that was not equitable. I am glad that that is no longer the case?
