"WHAT ARE YOU DOING ABOUT ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS?" MP ASKS HOME

- Wednesday, 5th July 2006

Following the ?starburst? of 17 suspected illegal immigrants from a lorry in Wheathampstead, Peter Lilley, MP for Hitchin and Harpenden, has asked the Home Secretary what his department is doing to trace them.

Peter Lilley said, "There was a burst of police activity after what they call the ?starburst? of suspected illegal immigrants from a lorry in my constituency on Friday. A helicopter, 6 police cars and 17 officers were deployed. That is fine.

"Unfortunately, only 3 were detained. The remainder disappeared towards London and we are told they are now "the responsibility of the Immigration and Nationality Department in the Home Office?. The Home Secretary has admitted how "unfit for purpose? that Department is.

"I fear they will be no more interested in these new arrivals than in the thousand criminals released without deportation. So I have tabled a question for the Home Secretary demanding to know what action his department is taking in this case.?
