The Roads Minister's announcement of plans to create a new lane on the A1(M) was welcomed by Hertfordshire MPs in Parliament during last week's debate on the Infrastructure Bill. The announcement followed a meeting between the Roads Minister, John Hayes, and Hertfordshire MPs - Stephen McPartland, Oliver Heald and Peter Lilley when they pressed for measures to ease congestion on the A1(M) and local roads. The Minister subsequently confirmed that the A1(M) will be widened between Junction 6 and Junction 8, which runs from Welwyn Garden City to Hitchin.

After the meeting Stephen McPartland said: "For more than 30 years, my constituents and other in our part of Hertfordshire have been stuck in huge tailbacks, which has put a massive chokehold on the economic potential of Hertfordshire. I am absolutely delighted the Secretary of State announced in his statement last week that the A1(M) is going to be widened and that there are plan to make our section of it a smart motorway."

Peter Lilley said:"This project has won near-unanimous support in our part of Hertfordshire, not least because it is economical, it will be done using an existing hard shoulder, it involves minimal disruption to those who currently get stuck on those two lanes and it can be done quickly. This will be fantastic for our constituents allowing them to move more freely and speedily and will be a great boost to the local economy."

Oliver Heald said: "From Tewin in the South to Letworth in the North of my constituency, A1(M) widening is a help to my constituents and a real boost for business. I am delighted our campaign has succeeded in obtaining such a big investment in our area."
